A Reminder to Check In

October is a timely reminder that mental health deserves the same care and attention as our physical well-being.

In our busy daily lives, it’s easy to focus on work, family, responsibilities and deadlines while ignoring our emotional health. Stress, grief, anxiety, loneliness or exhaustion can affect anyone, regardless of age or background. Taking care of our mental health often begins with small, consistent habits that help us feel more balanced and supported.

Getting enough sleep, eating nourishing meals, staying physically active and spending time outdoors can positively impact our mood and overall well-being. Just as important is allowing ourselves to rest, setting healthy boundaries and taking breaks when life becomes overwhelming. Talking with trusted friends or family members can also lighten the emotional load we sometimes carry in silence.

It is also a reminder to check on the people around us. Someone may appear cheerful while quietly going through a difficult time. Instead of asking “How are you?”, try asking “How have you really been lately?” or “Is there anything you’d like to talk about?” These simple questions can create space for honest conversations.

When someone opens up, one of the greatest gifts we can offer is listening. We don’t always need to have the perfect advice or solution. Being present, avoiding judgment and, when needed, encouraging someone to seek professional support can make a meaningful difference.

In Malay and Boracay, the Malay-Boracay Lifeline group is available for individuals who may need someone to talk to. The group has a counselor who can provide emotional support, and one of its members also operates a clinic in Kalibo for those who may need further assistance.

If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time, don’t hesitate to reach out.

This October, let’s make mental health part of our everyday conversations. A little kindness, a listening ear and a genuine check-in may be more powerful than we realize.
