Boracay Fishing Festival Hooks 310 Anglers in Successful Debut

The first-ever Boracay Fishing Festival attracted about 310 anglers from Boracay and provinces across the Philippines, turning White Beach into a showcase of fishing skill, sportsmanship and community pride.
Held on June 7, the jigging tournament was organized by the Municipal Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council (MFARMC) and the Boracay Fishing Festival organizers in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Malay, the Malay Municipal Tourism Office and the Municipal Agriculture Office.
Taking top honors in the Heaviest Single Catch category was Michael Abique of Samar, who landed an 11.37-kilogram barracuda and won the ₱100,000 grand prize.
In his opening remarks, Malay Mayor Frolibar Bautista said the festival aims to become an annual event that complements Boracay’s tourism industry while promoting sustainable fisheries and marine conservation. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the island’s roots as a fishing community, noting that Boracay’s identity extends beyond its beaches and resorts.
Festival-goers also had the chance to buy freshly caught seafood at affordable prices during the awarding ceremony, with some fish reportedly selling for as low as ₱100 per kilo.
Meanwhile, Councilor Jhonnel Casidsid highlighted the event’s eco-conscious approach, noting that organizers adopted a manual catch format and ensured proper disposal of fishing gear to help protect marine ecosystems.
