A Spiritual Oasis in Boracay
By Freida Dario-Santiago

Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary Parish Church in Boracay, often referred to as the Balabag Church is a beloved Catholic landmark in the heart of Boracay and a popular choice for island destination weddings in Paradise.
Before its establishment, Catholics worshipped in smaller chapels or traveled to the mainland of Malay. However, the rapid growth in population and tourism in the early 90s made a dedicated parish necessary on what was fast becoming a world-famous island (and tropical wedding) destination.
Formally established as a Roman Catholic parish in 1994, the church was built to serve Boracay’s rapidly growing community. Before its founding, locals worshipped in small chapels or traveled to mainland Malay. Located in Brgy. Balabag near Station 1, it stands as a spiritual oasis for locals and tourists amidst the island’s bustling tourism.
Unlike centuries-old colonial churches found elsewhere in the Philippines, its architecture is relatively modern, characterized by a bright white exterior and a simple yet elegant design. Notable artistic features include stone-clad walls with a sleek façade, glass elements, and local artistic features such as intricate mosaics depicting Christian symbols like the Holy Spirit (represented by a winged figure), Christ, palm trees, ocean waves, and fish rendered in multi-colored stones. The pediment is topped with a cross.
The parish serves as a spiritual anchor for both residents and visitors, offering daily Masses in Hiligaynon, Tagalog, and English. Sunday services are particularly vibrant, filled with locals and tourists alike, offering guests a unique glimpse into Filipino spirituality and community spirit.
Beyond its liturgical functions, the church is a hub for religious festivals, ceremonies (weddings, baptisms) and celebrations. The parish celebrates its Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary every May 12.
Whether you are seeking a moment of quiet reflection, prayer, or a deeper connection to local culture, the parish remains a must-visit destination on the island.
