Globetrotting, one warm flatbread at a time
By Jaz Mara
From savory wraps to flaky parathas, whether stuffed with vegetables or wrapped around grilled meat, flatbreads have long been a staple across continents and cultures. It is fascinating to think that something as simple as flour and water can become the foundation of so many beloved dishes. By adding a few ingredients and changing the technique, entirely different types of flatbreads emerge.
Fortunately, Boracay locals and visitors can enjoy a wide selection of these global favorites, all at reasonable prices.
Mexico
If you crave aromatic Mexican flavors, Tres Amigos in D’Mall is worth a visit. Their Birria Tacos (₱565) feature three crisp tacos filled with tender, pressure-cooked beef, cheese, onions and cilantro, served with a rich consommé that is deeply flavorful with just the right amount of heat. Another standout is the Chimichanga (₱525), packed with your choice of protein, Mexican rice, beans, vegetables and cheese, then topped with salsa and sour cream. A touch of mango on the side balances the savory flavors perfectly.
Greece
Also located in D’Mall, Cyma Greek Taverna serves excellent pita bread that perfectly complements its fillings. The Chicken Gyro (₱230) combines chicken, tzatziki, onions, tomatoes and lettuce in a warm pita wrap finished with honey mustard and parsley. The Chicken Souvlaki (₱545), featuring grilled chicken marinated in Mediterranean spices, is equally satisfying when wrapped in pita with vegetables and lemon-garlic yogurt.
Middle East
The Falafel Pita (P260) from Falafel Boracay has become a favorite for good reason. The falafels are flavorful and perfectly crisp, while the garlic mayo, tahini and hot sauce add extra character. The handmade pita, prepared fresh daily and never frozen, is arguably the star of the dish. Their beef (₱290) and chicken shawarmas (₱260) are equally enjoyable, filled with tender, caramelized meat, fresh vegetables and generous amounts of sauce.

India
Indian cuisine offers many types of flatbread, and Little Taj’s Stuffed Paratha (₱300) is a delicious introduction. This flaky flatbread is filled with chicken, served with tikka masala sauce and cut into triangles for easy sharing. Well-spiced, hearty and satisfying, it works equally well as a snack with friends or a meal on its own.

Morocco
Kasbar along White Beach showcases the classic pairing of spinach and cheese with its Creamy Spinach Pita Pizza (₱499). Rich spinach sauce and mozzarella are layered over baked pita bread, creating a creamy, comforting dish with satisfying cheese pulls in every bite. Pair it with a refreshing cocktail and enjoy the beachfront view for the full experience.
